My latest review is for the wonderfully written, deliciously plotted and nostalgic The Dress Thief by Natalie Meg Evans. I must admit, it was the cover that drew me to this book, it is SO eye-catching and conjures up just the right atmosphere for the story itself.
Set against the backdrop of 1930's Parisian haute couture, The Dress Thief is a mystery, love story and suspense-filled tale following the career dreams of heroine, Alix Gower. The author brings together a wide cast of characters that each have an affect on Alix as she pursues her dreams in many ways that could be considered lack integrity. Having said that, the reasoning and motivation behind her actions make every agonising decision she makes understandable, thus provoking an empathy and sympathy that is all-important when creating reader care for a protagonist.
The hero, Verrian Haviland, a war reporter with a sad, heartfelt past is the perfect match for Alix's strong, purposeful spirit and I was rooting for their union from the moment they came together on the page.
There is little else to say without spoiling the page-turning richness of this book, other than I highly recommend this tale for lovers of suspense, romance and love of a by-gone era.
